ABOUT

Why the News Media?”

With 24/7 access to news through print, online content, live streaming, and on-demand programming, the news media are a constant influence in our lives.  The news has essentially become the “background noise” in our lives.  And whether we acknowledge it or not, this input is conditioning us to think and behave in certain ways.  The language of the media infiltrates our speech and action, unconsciously shaping society.  Yet ordinary citizens aren’t the only people influenced by the 24/7 news cycle.  Policy makers get their information from the same place we do, meaning that biased reporting has the potential to lead to the creation of biased national and international laws and policies.

"More than once I have been told The Post’s front page, along with that of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, is better than a White House memo if you want to reach the president." - Walther Pincus, The Washington Post

“I only know what I hear on NPR from various experts” - Hillary Clinton, while Secretary of State

“With their powerful influence on shaping the perceptions of large audiences, the media are key players for the [global] gender equality agenda. With influence comes responsibility.” - Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women Executive Director

We at Think Broader believe that the media, with this high-level of influence, has inherent moral and ethical responsibility to provide accurate, unbiased, and comprehensive coverage of all citizens
